This manual is aimed primarily at providing the knowledge required by candidates for the Commercial Pilot Licence in Principles of Flight and Performance (Aeroplane). Chapters 1-15 cover Part I of the examination (Principles of Flight) while Chapter 16 covers Part II (Performance).
Candidates for the New Zealand Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopter) examinations are referred to the book Principles of Helicopter Flight by W.J. Wagtendonk which is published in the USA and is also available through the Waypoints website, www.waypoints.co.nz.
The information in this manual is presented in a direct, easy-to-follow manner which is practical and thorough. Studying the manual and completing the review questions will prepare you for the examination and the knowledge gained will make you a better, safer and more confident pilot.
At the end of each chapter you will find a chapter review which consists of a series of simple but comprehensive questions. As you finish reading a chapter you should take a break and complete the review. When you have written down your answers, you can refer to Appendix 2 at the back of the manual to compare your results with ours.
A sample examination is included at Appendix 1. It is similar to the examinations prepared by ASPEQ to test candidates for the CPL. Once you have finished reading the manual and completed the chapter reviews, you should test yourself under simulated examination conditions. The answers are given after the review answers in Appendix 2.
